Aviation Explorer Post 9

AE_Post9_Flier-2012-08LOGO Aviation Explorer Post 9 is a Learning for Life program sponsored by Windy City Flyers, operating out of the Chicago Executive Airport (PWK) in Wheeling, IL. Young men and women over the age 14, are invited to join the Aviation Explorer Post 9 team to experience the thrill of flying and explore the rewards of aviation.

The objectives of the program are:

  1. Provide a broad look at many of the career possibilities in the aviation industry
  2. Provide an opportunity to learn the basic knowledge used by professionals in aviation
  3. Provide an opportunity to become as deeply involved in aviation activities as possible, by including programs such as private pilot ground school and familiarization flying
  4. Explore firsthand the world of aviation and the principles of flight
  5. Investigate all aspects of the aviation industry
  6. Learn to care for a plane, keep it maintained, and fly it in a professional manner

The core of the program is the study of the principal of flight, navigation, weather and other topics essential to flying. Four times a year they have an opportunity to see these principles in action as they take a flight, actually taking control of a single-engine airplane. Professional flight simulators are also used to supplement their learning. Field trips and outside speakers enable Explorers to discover other aviation careers. Recent field trips include local airport control towers and other FAA installations, maintenance and repair facilities, business jet charter services and other industry-related venues.

Some of the activities include:

  1. Air traffic control tower visits
  2. Local aviation business visits
  3. EAA Oshkosh Airshow volunteer opportunities
  4. Airplane wash fundraiser
  5. “Preflight war” contests
  6. Local airport visits and tours
  7. Informal lessons and briefings by Windy City Flyers Flight Instructors

Previous members of the AE Post 9 have gone on to become Commercial Pilots, Military Pilots, Flight Instructors, Aircraft Mechanics, Air Traffic Controllers, Airport Managers, Airport Operations Supervisors and/or Airline Dispatchers.

The Post is seeking to add interested, enthusiastic, young people. Adult volunteers are always welcome to assist with program implementation or supervision.
